Breer Tackles Aaron Rodgers Stalemate in Latest 'MMQB Takeaways'

SI's NFL writer provides obligatory periodic update on Jets' quest for four-time MVP

Albert Breer knows what New York Jets' fans need.

The Sports Illustrated writer kept the Gang Green faithful up to date on the Aaron Rodgers trade saga in his "Monday Morning Quarterback Takeaways" article on April 17.

Breer suggested that the negotiations are currently "status quo" and the two teams have already agreed to exchange one of the Jets' 2023 second-round draft picks.

The stalemate seemingly stems from two factors. The sides need to determine which 2024 selection will be packaged in the deal while Gang Green reportedly wants a built-in insurance policy should Rodgers only play one season.

Breer also re-stated his belief that the existing relationships between key figures from both the Jets and Packers will allow the process to eventually reach a reasonable conclusion.

Here's what Breer wrote on the topic in "MMQB" Takeaways:

"Because we need an Aaron Rodgers update every week, I’d say we’re status quo on that. So I’ll reiterate my sense that there’s a basic agreement on the 2023 pick—it’ll be one of the Jets’ second-rounders—involved, and this is going to come down to how the ’24 pick (and possible ’25 pick) is dressed up.

With that in mind, there are two questions to be answered. Is the 2024 a hard first-rounder (guaranteeing a pick between Nos. 1 and 32) or one with a playoff (making it picks 19–50), conference title game (picks 29–60) or Super Bowl (picks 31–62) condition on it? And if it were to be a hard first-rounder, could the Packers offer protection for the Jets against the possibility that Rodgers retires after a single year (potentially with a ’25 pick giveback)?

The GMs, as I see it, have been creative in trying to find solutions. The head coaches, as is well documented, are best friends. So at this point, with a deal really a few details away, it comes down to the leaders those guys answer to—Jets owner Woody Johnson and Packers president Mark Murphy—to push this one over the goal line."

Although the timetable is currently open ended, it doesn't appear to be a matter of if the deal will get done. Jets' general manager Joe Douglas sounded confident about Rodgers' eventual arrival while speaking on stage at a WFAN-sponsored event on April 7.

“He's gonna be here,” said Douglas to the delight of the crowd gathered at "Boomer and Gio Live."

Less than one week later, Packers’ President Mark Murphy answered Rodgers-related questions from reporters covering the team’s annual Tailgate Tour launch.

"I know Brian [Gutekunst] and [Jets' GM] Joe [Douglas] have been talking," said Murphy, who was unwilling to offer any more substantiative details.
