Amon-Ra St. Brown 'Can't Wait' For Jameson Williams' Second Season

In this story:
Detroit Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown understands how valuable second-year wideout Jameson Williams can be in Ben Johnson's offense.
Speaking with the Free Press, Detroit's talented wideout discussed his offseason, Jameson Williams' second campaign in the NFL and just how important it was for the team to get back its offensive coordinator, especially since the offense had a significant amount of success in 2022.
Earlier this offseason, St. Brown allowed himself five days in Cabo, where he completely relaxed and did not participate in any football-related activities.
Moving forward, the team has elevated expectations, including winning the division and advancing far in the postseason.
In order for the team to reach that level of success, speedy wideout Jameson Williams will need to emerge as a reliable contributor.
"I can't wait to see Jameson fully getting a whole offseason under his belt. Being able to work with all of us," St. Brown said. "I can't wait to see what he does. I've seen him in practice, I know what he can do. It's just a matter of everything just lining up. He came off that knee and they threw him in towards the end of the season. So, just came getting a whole offseason under his belt, being able to work out and train how he's used to training. I think the sky's the limit for him. I can't wait to see what he does. I know he's going, he's for sure going to stretch that defense. So hopefully, the underneath route will be much more open. But I can't wait to see what he does on that field."
Becoming No. 1 offense
The offensive unit also has elevated goals. St. Brown indicated that he and his teammates want to be ranked No. 1 in offensive yards per game and total scoring offense while limiting turnovers.
Part of the reason the elevated goals are all attainable is that the team was able to bring back offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, who has emerged as one of the top offensive minds in the National Football League.
Once the third-year wideout found out that Johnson was returning, he reached out and expressed his relief that the talented assistant was back in the fold.
"I called him. We just talked, you know," St. Brown explained. "He told me he was excited to come back. I told him I was excited that he's coming back. We just talked about life, family, whatever it was. And that I was ready to take that next step next year."
Burning desire to earn playoff berth, lead
In his third season, St. Brown indicated he wants to become more of a leader in the locker room.
After winning eight of their final 10 games last year, a burning desire emerged for several members of the roster.
During his offseason workouts, St. Brown was told by members of the Chargers and 49ers that the Lions would have been dangerous, had they earned a spot in the postseason in 2022.
"Moving forward, obviously, I have my personal goals, but what I really want to do this year is --I know we won a few games last year, and we finished pretty strong. But, man, I want to go to the playoffs bad. I feel like Detroit as a city, they want it so bad. I feel like as a team, we want it bad. I feel like we got the guys to do it," St. Brown said. "So, I'm just excited to to start winning games consistently week in and week out.
"Being able to go into the game confident that we're going to win. Not saying we weren't confident last year, but just having that kind of -- cockiness is not the right word -- but just the understanding that, look, we put the work in, we know what we have on our team," St. Brown continued. "We got the guys, let's go win it. I think that's kind of where where we're headed and I'm excited for it. I can't wait."
Part of the reason Lions general manager Brad Holmes targeted St. Brown coming out of USC was because of his natural ability to lead.
Players will easily gravitate towards a player who has demonstrated a desire to put in the work and go above and beyond what it takes to succeed in the NFL.
"I just want to be more of a leader going into year three," said St. Brown. "I think, I am old enough now to become a leader. We got draftees coming up, the guys from last year that played for us really well in that class. So, I'm just excited to become more of a leader and start winning games."
St. Brown indicated he will return to Detroit for the beginning of offseason workouts next Monday.
