Report: Ben Johnson Top Choice for Commanders Vacancy

In this story:
Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson is among the most coveted assistant head coaches.
Johnson has elevated quickly through the coaching ranks in the Lions organization, after starting Dan Campbell's tenure as the tight ends coach.
Detroit's former offensive coordinator, Anthony Lynn, did not end up being a fit with Campbell's vision for his offense.
Since being named to his current position, Johnson has led Detroit's offense to emerge as among the most potent scoring units in the NFL.
With success running the offense the past two seasons, it is expected the talented offensive mind will be a hot commodity during the next hiring cycle for NFL teams in search of new leadership.
According to The Athletic, the Washington Commanders have strong interest in making Johnson their next head coach, after deciding to move on from Ron Rivera.
NFL reporter Diana Russini explained, "While Washington is going to attack this search for a head coach with openness and flexibility, the Commanders are targeting Detroit's Ben Johnson as their top choice, per sources Carolina is also hoping to land Johnson."
Recently, the Commanders decided to name former San Francisco 49ers executive Adam Peters as their next general manager.
According to Sports Illustrated, "Peters has worked in the NFL for 21 years, first with the New England Patriots as a scout and later with the Denver Broncos as an executive. He joined San Francisco in 2017 as a vice president of player personnel and was promoted to assistant general manager in 2021."
Among the first items to cross off the to do list for Peters will be working with the advisory committee to find the organization's next head coach, after another sub .500 season in 2023.
After finishing with a disappointing record of 4–13, the Commanders currently possess the second pick in the 2024 NFL draft.
