The Detroit Lions are in a unique position in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft.

At the No. 6 spot, some of the elite defensive prospects will likely be already gone, including Georgia's Jalen Carter and Alabama's Will Anderson.

Detroit general manager Brad Holmes has not put a concrete timetable on the Lions' rebuild, but is instead focused on the process of adding talent to the roster that fits the culture and has the necessary intangibles to perform at the highest level when called upon.

"We never really put an anchored time stamp on, ‘Oh man, it’s going to be a three-year thing, it’s going to be a four-year thing.’ We really just concentrated on, ‘Let’s make sure that we’re chopping wood and doing our part every single day, and working hard every single day to win a game, and just make this place a winner.’ And, that’s what we’re continuing to do," Holmes told reporters at the end of the season. "I think you could make a case that we’re ahead of schedule. But again, we don’t really dive into that really that much."

Ahead of the draft, speculation has started regarding how Holmes and the front office will approach the first round.

Sports talk radio host Jim Costa, who had previously expressed a desire for the Lions to target a quarterback at No. 6, proposed on social media the idea of Holmes moving up in the draft to target one of the draft's top-tier prospects.

Costa asked on social media, "Is anyone actually excited about the Lions options at 6? Why not trade up to 3 and guarantee yourself one of the elite defenders/QB. Feels like a 4 player tier and the Lions have the means to make a move."

Proposed trade

  • The Lions would send the No. 6 overall pick in the 2023 draft and two second-round picks to the Arizona Cardinals
  • The Cardinals would then send the Lions the No. 3 overall pick in the 2023 draft.

Here is a sample of the reaction online to the proposed trade from Costa.
