In this story:

GREEN BAY, Wis. – The Green Bay Packers, obviously, didn’t practice on Monday. If they would have under threat of expulsion from the NFL, six starters would not have practiced.

With the Packers embarking on a short week before a huge NFC North game against the Detroit Lions on Thursday night at Lambeau Field, receiver Christian Watson, left tackle David Bakhtiari, left guard Elgton Jenkins, right tackle Zach Tom, linebacker De’Vondre Campbell and cornerback Jaire Alexander would not have practiced.

Running back Aaron Jones, who missed the last two games, would have been limited. Jones went through an extensive pregame workout on Sunday.

Jones, Watson, Bakhtiari, Jenkins and Alexander – five of the team’s cream-of-the-crop players – did not play in Sunday’s come-from-behind victory over the New Orleans Saints. Campbell missed all but 11 snaps and Tom was injured during the final series.

While all eyes, again, will be on Jones and Watson given their explosive playmaking ability, the health of Green Bay’s offensive line will be something to watch this week with the Lions and their physical defensive front coming to Lambeau Field.

At this early stage of the week, three of the five starting linemen are questionable. Bakhtiari has missed two games in a row due to his troublesome knee, Jenkins probably won’t be ready following last week’s knee injury and Tom sustained his injury on the game-winning drive.

Tom played through the injury for a few snaps, including for the decisive touchdown, but was replaced by Yosh Nijman for the three run-out-the-clock snaps.

“I think any time a guy isn't able to finish, it’s a concern,” LaFleur said. “So, he’s doing better today. But we’ll give him up until game time to try to get it under control and we’ll see where he’s at.”

Cornerback Carrington Valentine, who started for Alexander but suffered a biceps injury during the second quarter, would not have practiced, either. The injury was sustained on a missed tackle; the injury is not a tear, LaFleur said.

Without Campbell, the Packers mostly went with Isaiah McDuffie playing alongside Quay Walker.

“We have starters and you have starters in waiting,” defensive coordinator Joe Barry said on Monday. “I just hate ever referring to those guys as backups because you’re literally one play away from being a starter.”

That was especially true at corner. The Packers carried only four on the 53-man roster. With Alexander’s back flaring up on Friday, they elevated Corey Ballentine from the practice squad for depth and special teams. Ballentine played 30 snaps and broke up one pass.

“I thought both those guys came in and did a nice job and competed,” LaFleur said. “Especially a guy like Corey Ballentine coming off the p-squad late in the week, not knowing if you’re going to get much action. He knew he was going to contribute on (special) teams, but to get 30-some-odd snaps on defense, I thought he did a really nice job.”
