The Green Bay Packers have placed tight end Jace Sternberger on injured reserve due to the ankle injury sustained in the preseason finale against Kansas City.

The injury was the latest blow that curtailed the third-round pick’s development. He suffered a concussion in the joint practices against Houston and played in only one of the preseason games. That, of course, was against the Chiefs, when he caught 1-of-4 passes for 2 yards and a touchdown.

Teams are allowed to bring two players back from injured reserve. In Sternberger’s case, he could begin practicing after Week 6 and make his NFL debut in Week 9. Considering the Packers knew they were drafting a talented but unpolished player, no doubt they want to get him on the practice field.

According to a source, receiver Allen Lazard will be promoted from the practice squad and take Sternberger’s place on the roster. Lazard will give the Packers a sixth receiver in the presumed absence of rookie Darrius Shepherd, who did not practice this week. There already was concern about whether the Packers would be able to keep Lazard on the practice squad; the Packers poached Lazard off Jacksonville’s practice squad in December and the 6-foot-5 former Iowa State star had a strong training camp and preseason.

Even removing Sternberger from the injury report, the Packers listed 19 players on their injury report. Offensive lineman Alex Light and cornerback Tramon Williams were added to the list. Of the 19, 13 were full participation, so the Packers will head to Chicago with few injury concerns.

While the team's practice week is done, it will turn in an injury report on Wednesday with the usual game designations.
