Packers bring back safety Ibraheim Campbell

The Green Bay Packers re-signed safety Ibraheim Campbell before Thursday night’s preseason opener against Houston.

Campbell (5-11, 210) was a late-season addition last season, bolstering a safety corps that had been blown up by general manager Brian Gutekunst. He played in three games, including one start, and recorded 20 tackles, one forced fumble and one pass defensed before going on injured reserve with a torn ACL.

Campbell entered the NFL as a fourth-round pick by the Cleveland Browns in 2015. The coach of that team was Mike Pettine, who’s now the Packers’ defensive coordinator.

“He did a solid job for us and essentially was a backup safety, then had a role on core special teams,” Pettine said when the Packers signed him last year. “I kind of tracked him through the years where he’s bounced around. When his name came up as a possibility, he’s a guy who’s smart, tough, who’s obviously now played some time in the league and is going to be more experienced. I wouldn’t think it would be an issue for him coming in at all trying to get him up to speed.

In four NFL seasons with the Browns, Texans, Jets and Packers, Campbell has played in 46 games (14 starts) and recorded 88 tackles on defense plus 12 more on special teams. He played safety and dime linebacker for Green Bay last year.

“It’s definitely never a good feeling to be released but you can’t let it get you down,” Campbell said of his journeyman career. “At the end of the day, you have to stay ready, you have to keep your confidence high because that’s what lets you play at a high level. I’ve played in this league long enough to realize that and understand that, so I’ll never let anything sway me from my game. That’s where I’m at with my game and my career.”

Campbell was among 26 players who did not dress for the game.

Also on Thursday, the team released running back Corey Grant and waived/injured outside linebacker Kendall Donnerson. Grant was signed last week – the Packers were intrigued by his speed but he didn’t make any plays on the practice field. Donnerson was a seventh-round pick last year who didn’t play as a rookie and had been sidelined by a hamstring injury.
