Packers-Cowboys injury report: Adams ruled out for Sunday

Green Bay Packers receiver Davante Adams has been ruled out for Sunday’s game at Dallas with turf toe, an injury sustained late in last week’s loss to Philadelphia.

Coach Matt LaFleur’s decision wasn’t a surprise – Adams didn’t practice at all this week – though LaFleur didn’t rule him out immediately after practice. In fact, he left the door open just a sliver at that time that Adams – who scored the game-winning touchdown at Dallas in 2017 – could play.

“You want to put your best players on the field and he’s a guy that’s got a ton of reps. So, I would feel comfortable with him, without a week of practice, just going out there and playing,” LaFleur said.

Also out are running back Jamaal Williams (concussion) and backup cornerback and special-teams demon Tony Brown (hamstring). Starting cornerback Kevin King (groin) is doubtful. None of those three practiced this week.

For the Cowboys, as expected, left tackle Tyron Smith is out. Right tackle La’el Collins, who didn’t practice on Wednesday or Thursday, returned to practice on Friday and is questionable. Also questionable is big-play receiver Michael Gallup, who had knee surgery just over two weeks ago.

Without Adams, the Packers will roll into Dallas with a receiver corps that’s relatively short on experience and production. By himself, Adams has 373 receptions and scored 39 touchdowns in five-plus seasons. Marquez Valdes-Scantling (16 receptions this season), Geronimo Allison (eight), Jake Kumerow (one), Allen Lazard (zero) and Darrius Shepherd (zero) have a combined 127 receptions and 10 touchdowns for their careers. Adams has 25 receptions this season; the others have a combined 25 receptions, as well.

By production and snaps, Valdes-Scantling and Allison figure to be the top targets for Rodgers. After a strong training camp, Kumerow could get more of an opportunity, too. He caught one pass in Week 2 vs. Minnesota but was inactive the past two games while limited at practice with a shoulder injury.

“I think we could have done a better job as a staff,” LaFleur said of getting Kumerow involved. “It starts right here. I could have made sure that he was getting in there more, because I think it’s hard for a receiver to play every snap and to give maximum effort when they’re constantly running at full speed. That’s tough to do. So, you would like a little bit of a rotation just to keep guys fresh so that that will ensure they’re giving their best effort each and every play.”

Meanwhile, right tackle Bryan Bulaga is questionable after being limited all week by the shoulder injury that sidelined him for the second half against the Eagles. Inside linebacker Oren Burks, who suffered a partially torn pectoral in the first preseason game on Aug. 8, also is questionable and could make his season debut after returning to practice this week and going through his first padded work on Thursday.

“I thought he’s had a good week of practice and we’ll see how he feels after today,” LaFleur said.
