What the ESPN FPI Says About the Panthers' Chances Against the Cowboys

Dallas is heavily favored in this week's matchup.

So, you're telling me there's a chance? Well, no, not really.

The ESPN Football Power Index (FPI) is giving the Carolina Panthers a little more love than expected with a 15.6% chance to defeat the Dallas Cowboys this Sunday. Dallas has an 84.3% chance to win the game.

I understand giving Carolina a little bit of a chance with it being at home but if we're being honest, there's like a 0.2% chance the Panthers come out of this one with a W. A whole lot of things have to go right for Carolina for that to be the outcome. They will have to play nearly perfect in all three phases AND receive some help from Dallas via turnovers and costly penalties.

Dallas has won three of its last four games with the only loss coming to arguably the best team in the NFC, the Philadelphia Eagles. In the three wins, the Cowboys are beating teams by an average of 19.3 points.

Since offensive coordinator Thomas Brown took over the play-calling duties, the Panthers are averaging just 13.6 points per game. That's not going to cut it against one of the most explosive offenses in the NFL and that's partially why Frank Reich hasn't committed to Brown as the play-caller moving forward.

The Cowboys lead the all-time series over the Panthers, 10-5.
