Edelman Talks With Crosby About His Switch to WR

Former NFL wide receiver Julian Edelman talked with Las Vegas Raiders star Maxx Crosby about switching positions in the league.

Las Vegas Raiders star Maxx Crosby is in his offseason.

During the 2023 regular season, Crosby began a podcast with some of his former Eastern Michigan teammates called "The Rush with Maxx Crosby."

So far, Crosby has had several star-studded guests on the show, including former Raiders running back Josh Jacobs, Coach Antonio Pierce, NFL insider Ian Rapoport and several members of the Raiders’ defensive line and defensive line coach Rob Leonard.

Crosby had another illustrious guest on the pod this week -- former NFL wide receiver Julian Edelman. Edelman amassed 6,800 receiving yards in his career and won three Super Bowls with the New England Patriots.

Before becoming a wide receiver in the NFL, Edelman was a quarterback at Kent State. He switched positions in the league, and the rest is history.

Edelman discussed the switch to receiver and how it helped his career when he joined Crosby's latest podcast episode.

“Being a quarterback blossomed me into the receiver I became because of the knowledge I knew,” he said. “I knew flat to downhill on an in-cut so you don’t get undercut by a DB. I used to get so mad about that when I was a quarterback. You have to come flat downhill or coming back to the quarterback at a curl route to stack the defender, keeping your body in between you and the ball. All the little s--- like that, and really, what was the best thing for me was the pre-snap stuff.

“When you’re playing quarterback, you have a pre-snap read, and then you have a post-snap read, so I learned the safeties when I was playing quarterback very well. Corners can lie. They can jump out, bail, bump and run. The safeties can never lie. So, I learned that as a quarterback, and so, when you’re playing receiver in our system, you could have one play called, and it could be four different routes, and that was the thing I was able to do very well.”

Edelman became one of the best success stories in the league. Learning a new position in the league is difficult, but Edelman ended up not only surviving at it but thriving at it.
