PFF Lists Favorite, Least Favorite Raiders Moves

The Las Vegas Raiders have made multiple quality moves this offseason. Pro Football Focus graded their offseason moves so far.

The Las Vegas Raiders' signing of defensive tackle Christian Wilkins instantly gave them one of, if not the best defensive lines in the National Football League. While the Raiders have made other signings this offseason, Wilkins was arguably their most significant addition.

Surprisingly, however, Pro Football Focus’ Brad Speilberger's favorite move for the Raiders wasn’t the signing of Wilkins but a more under-the-radar signing the team made that he liked best.

In a recent article where Speilberger listed his favorite and least favorite move for every NFL team, he listed Raiders center Andre James as his favorite signing the club has made so far this offseason. Bringing back the veteran offensive lineman was nearly as crucial as adding Wilkins.

“One of the shrewd moves of the [Jon] Gruden/[Mike] Mayock regime was trading veteran stalwart Rodney Hudson for a third-round pick from the Arizona Cardinals and signing James to a short-term extension to take over as the starter,” Speilberger said. “James has improved each season and is a quality pass protector under center who should be a big help to the next franchise quarterback in Las Vegas. This was a good value with the ever-growing interior offensive line market, though center is still lagging behind guard for now.”

Speilberger graded James' signing an A-value, suggesting that it was a good move on the field and that the Raiders also signed James at a fair price.

Conversely, Speilberger listed the signing of veteran quarterback Gardner Minshew as his least favorite move for the Raiders so far. He believes the team should consider using their first-round draft pick on a quarterback.

“The Raiders get a respectable bridge starter in the fold but need to actually add the other end of the bridge, with the No. 13 pick currently burning a hole in their pocket,” Speilberger said. “They’ll be battling the No. 11 overall pick Minnesota Vikings and No. 12 overall pick Denver Broncos to move up for a quarterback, it appears. Nonetheless, Minshew salvaged the Colts' season and earned this contract despite his capped ceiling. At the end of the day, we’re left wondering if the Raiders could have signed another comparable bridge option for less money."

The NFL Draft will be held in Detroit, Mich., on April 25-27, 2024. The Las Vegas Raiders currently have the No. 13 overall pick.
