The Las Vegas Raiders had a long-term quarterback with Derek Carr, but now they're back to looking for that consistency under a new regime.

Yes, the Raiders are tired of missing the playoffs and want to re-establish a winning culture as soon as possible, but they can't afford to swing and miss at the quarterback position anymore.

Signing veteran Jimmy Garoppolo and having to move on from him as a starter midway through the season was a big hit Las Vegas took after focusing a significant amount of its attention on a new franchise quarterback in the 2023 offseason.

Raiders Coach Antonio Pierce does not want the quarterback change to be a pattern.

"I would hope whoever we draft, that's the route we go -- that that's who the starter becomes," Pierce said at the NFL Combine on Feb. 28. "Again, I'll go back, if it's Aidan [O'Connell], or it's somebody we draft or we bring in -- you don't want to put a band-aid at that position. That's old, man, that's old.

"I think the Raiders -- we've seen that enough in this organization. I know we had Derek Carr here for a bunch of years, but before him and after him, it's been a bunch of one-stop guys. And I don't think any organization wants that.

"You want the face of your franchise to be the quarterback, to be that guy you can count on for the next 10 years."

Pierce hopes to see several negative trends end while he is at the helm, but this one will be one of the most important for Las Vegas to achieve its goals.

The NFL Draft will be held in Detroit, Mich., on April 25-27, 2024. The Las Vegas Raiders currently have the No. 13 overall pick.
