The Las Vegas Raiders made their first significant quarterback change in nearly a decade this offseason when they signed Jimmy Garoppolo to a three-year, $72.75 million contract.

Garoppolo will play with Coach Josh McDaniels again, as the two were together with the New England Patriots from 2014 to 2017. He gets a chance to return to a system with which he has a great deal of familiarity.

Garoppolo will have a chance to play behind an impressive offensive line and throw to one of the better wide receiver trios in the NFL in Davante Adams, Hunter Renfrow, and Jakobi Meyers.

The ancillary pieces are in place for Garoppolo to have a successful season, but what must he do to have a successful season for himself and the Raiders?

First and foremost, to have a successful season, Garoppolo has to stay healthy. He has dealt with several significant injuries throughout his career, including an ACL tear in 2018, an ankle sprain in 2020 and a broken foot last December.

Garoppolo is expected to be ready for the season after lingering complications from that foot injury. When he can be on the field, Garoppolo, more often than not, is winning football games. He holds a 40-17 regular season record as a starter in his career and has been to the Super Bowl and multiple NFC Championship games.

That’s the other thing that will determine success for Garoppolo; he has to win this Raiders team some games. The Raiders have missed the playoffs eight times in the last 10 seasons and hope not to make it nine out of the last 11.

While he has only started 15 games or more twice in the last four seasons, Garoppolo is 22-9 in those two seasons. When he is on the field, his team is winning games. The Raiders are hoping these trends continue.

Finally, Garoppolo will have to put up numbers. He had the best season of his career in 2019 when he passed for 3,978 yards and 27 touchdowns. If he posts stats close to these numbers in 2023, the Raiders will win more games, and Garoppolo could even find himself in the Pro Bowl.

Health, an improved team record, and high statistical production all factor into what would make this season a success for Garoppolo. He has to stay healthy for an entire season. If all these things come to fruition, he and the Raiders should be in for a surprisingly good 2023.

As predicted, if Garoppolo remains healthy for all 17 regular season games, the Raiders should make it to nine wins.

The Las Vegas Raiders open training camp for the entire team on July 25, 2023.

The Silver and Black open the preseason by hosting the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, Aug. 13, at 4 p.m. EDT/1 p.m. PDT.
