Raiders Should Continue to Build Responsibly

The Las Vegas Raiders have made a big splash so far this offseason. They should continue to build their roster responsibly this summer.

Early in his tenure as general manager of the Las Vegas Raiders, Tom Telesco has added to the roster with a mixture of a splash move by signing defensive lineman Christian Wilkins and more minor, yet possibly equally important signings like bringing back key free-agent center Andre James.

By re-signing James and running back Ameer Abdullah, the Raiders have taken a responsible approach to free agency. Not only did Telesco and the Raiders keep the important yet less noteworthy players on their roster, but they did so without overpaying for them.

However, not overpaying to keep vital pieces of their team that were free agents this offseason doesn't mean the Raiders are afraid to spend money when it makes sense to do so. If anything, it means the opposite.

By spending responsibly to keep players like James and Abdullah and not overpaying to keep fan favorites at positions that are being devalued, Telesco and the Raiders can afford to bring in top talent at other, more important spots, like Wilkins along the defensive line.

The Raiders barely missed the playoffs this past season, a season that saw nearly everything that could go wrong actually go wrong. They are not that far away from being where they want to be.

Whether through free agency or the NFL Draft, the Raiders must continue to take the responsible approach to the offseason that they have been taking so far. One of the most critical aspects of any team is how the front office spends the team's money.

After signing Wilkins to a massive $110-million deal, the Raiders are unlikely to make many more big moves of this kind. However, the addition of Wilkins to an already talented defense gives the Raiders the freedom to not have to make another big deal. Wilkins, combined with Maxx Crosby, Malcolm Koonce, and company, improves the Raiders' defense so much that the impact will also be felt on the offensive side of the ball.

Wilkins, along with the other additions the Raiders have made and will make this offseason, allows them to continue to add to their team in the most responsible way possible: through the draft and intelligent, affordable free-agent signings.

The NFL Draft will be held in Detroit, Mich., on April 25-27, 2024. The Las Vegas Raiders currently have the No. 13 overall pick.
