Moehrig's Performance Is Important Vs. Bears

With so many defensive backs out for the Las Vegas Raiders, safety Tre'von Moehrig's performance becomes ever so important.

The Las Vegas Raiders are set to face off against the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field on Sunday afternoon.

The Raiders have improved defensively this season, and one player who has been a major part of that improvement has been safety Tre’von Moehrig.

Moehrig was not at his best in 2022, but he has bounced back from last season and has been one of the Raiders’ best players on defense. Considering he is part of their long-term young core, this has been a welcome sight for Coach Josh McDaniels and Defensive Coordinator Patrick Graham.

As the Raiders are set to face a Bears team with several impactful pass-catching weapons, such as wide receiver D.J. Moore and tight end Cole Kmet, Moehrig will be an essential player in this game. He becomes an even more critical player with cornerbacks Nate Hobbs and Jakorian Bennett out because of injuries.

With those two players set to miss the game, Moehrig must perform well for the Raiders’ defense to maintain the consistently impressive play they have put on the field in the past few weeks. 

Even with quarterback Justin Fields out and undrafted rookie Tyson Bagent starting for the Bears, their pass catchers will still look to make an impact, and Moehrig must prevent that from happening.

Moehrig has played well this season and has been one of the reasons why the Raiders have improved against the pass. In 2023, Moehrig has posted 29 tackles, four passes defended, a sack and two interceptions. He did not have an interception last season, so for him to force two turnovers through six games signifies quite an improvement.

According to Pro Football Focus, Moehrig is having his best career season in coverage, earning a 78.7 coverage grade. He made a 77.7 coverage grade during his rookie season, which slipped to 49.0 last season. He has only allowed 60 yards in coverage and has not allowed a touchdown for four weeks in a row.

Against a Bears team with dynamic pass catchers, Moehrig will need to continue to play well, especially with two of the Raiders’ top cornerbacks out. His performance becomes increasingly important to the game's outcome because of those injuries.
