Evaluating the Raiders' CB Competition

In this story:
The Las Vegas Raiders have had an interesting offseason from the perspective of all the positional battles that have raged on throughout training camp.
One of those battles has been at the cornerback position. The Raiders have several candidates who can make the 53-man roster, but only a select few will be on it when Tuesday, Aug. 29, rolls around.
General Manager Dave Ziegler has done a good job constructing the cornerback room, mixing it with talented veterans and athletic young players. The Raiders know they need to be better in the secondary if they want to return to the postseason in 2023.
Let’s take a closer look at the state of the Raiders’ cornerback competition.
One of the most heated position battles going into the final week of the preseason, and our own Hondo S. Carpenter Sr. released a 53-man roster projection that had the Raiders carrying six cornerbacks on the active roster, as they did last season.
Those cornerbacks are Jakorian Bennett, Marcus Peters, Duke Shelley, David Long, Nate Hobbs and Amik Robertson.
That would leave off corners like Tyler Hall, Sam Webb and Brandon Facyson, who returned to the Raiders this offseason during free agency, while Hall came on strong at the end of last season. Webb signed with the Raiders as an undrafted free agent after the 2022 NFL Draft.
Ziegler has a difficult decision to make when it comes to deciding which cornerbacks to keep and how many. There are several talented players in the cornerback room who they may not want to lose.
The Raiders’ final preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys is the final opportunity for cornerbacks on the roster to make their case as to why they should be on the team after the final cut.
With a blend of veteran talent and young, long-term options, the Raiders’ cornerback room should be improved in 2023. The Raiders allowed far too many yards through the air last season and came into the offseason looking to change that.
Now, as final cut-down day is only a week away, they are looking to finalize the group of cornerbacks they believe can help them turn the defense around, and competition at that position should remain healthy and strong until then.
The Silver and Black return to preseason action when they play the Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium on Saturday, Aug. 26, at 8 p.m. EDT/5 p.m. PDT.
