As free agency is set to begin this upcoming week, the Las Vegas Raiders sit on a bevy of cap space and a number of positions at which they need to add talent.

The wide receiver position is not high on that list, however, with Davante Adams and Hunter Renfrow already in the fold, but two-time Pro Bowler Adam Thielen was just released by the Minnesota Vikings this week, so the Raiders could reconsider.

Thielen is 32 years old and cost too much money for Minnesota, so they decided a split was the best decision. Let’s take a closer look at Thielen and see if he would be a good fit in the Silver and Black.

Thielen was not drafted out of Minnesota State in 2013 but eventually earned a spot on the Vikings’ roster. He burst onto the scene in 2016 when he caught 69 passes for 967 yards and five touchdowns.

The following season, Thielen established himself as one of the top receivers in the league with 91 receptions for 1,276 yards and four touchdowns. He was named a Second Team All-Pro and a Pro Bowler.

Thielen would continue to be one of the most reliable No. 2 wide receivers in the NFL, whether he was playing behind Stefon Diggs or Justin Jefferson. In his career, Thielen has posted 534 receptions for 6,682 yards and 55 touchdowns.

As he gets older, Thielen’s best football probably is behind him, but he can have one of the better sets of hands in the league. The problem is, however, that Thielen was looking for a larger role in the offense, and if he joined the Raiders, would deal with a similar situation, as he would have to fight for targets next to Adams, Renfrow, and tight end Darren Waller.

The NFL free agency market is always unpredictable, and it’s possible that Thielen will not find a team looking to give him a larger role than he had in Minnesota. If that becomes the case, General Manager Dave Ziegler could explore the opportunity of adding Thielen, who still has some serviceable years of football left in him.

The 2023 NFL Draft will go from April 27-29 and be held at Union Station in Kansas City, Mo.

March 13-15 is the free agent negotiation period. During that time, starting at 12 p.m. EDT on March 13 and ending at 3:59:59 p.m. EDT on March 15, clubs are permitted to contact and enter into contract negotiations with the certified agents of players who will become Unrestricted Free Agents upon the expiration of their 2022 Player Contracts at 4 p.m EDT on March 15.

The 2023 NFL Year and Free Agency period begins at 4 p.m. EDT on March 15. The Raiders are expected to be significant players in the free-agent market this season.
