The Las Vegas Raiders are preparing for free agency, which is set to begin this week. Teams can start negotiating contracts with players as soon as Monday, March 13.

The Raiders sit on the fourth-most cap space in the NFL and can use that to their advantage. They need to find their next franchise quarterback, but before that, they need to put an offensive line together in front of that quarterback.

This is where the Carolina Panthers’ Cameron Erving could come into play. Erving is a journeyman at the right tackle position, a position the Raiders need to address. Let’s see if Erving would be a good fit in the Silver and Black.

Erving was drafted with the 19th overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft out of Florida State by the Cleveland Browns. After a couple of years in Cleveland, he was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs. He also made stops with the Dallas Cowboys and Panthers shortly thereafter, and now hits the free-agent market.

Erving has never stayed with a team longer than three seasons and has struggled during his career at times. He played in a reserve role for the Panthers last season, appearing in 11 games and taking only 76 snaps, according to Pro Football Focus.

Erving will be 31 years old when the season starts and probably won’t seek a multi-year contract, so he could add some depth to a Raiders’ offensive line that has four players on the free agent market. If needed, he could also slot in as the starting right tackle and offer up serviceable play in a Coach Josh McDaniels-led system that has worked for offensive linemen in the past.

While Erving has not been able to stick with a team in his career, it’s possible he could sign a short “prove it” deal with the Raiders and get his career back on track. General Manager Dave Ziegler has enough money to afford to take a swing on a guy like Erving on a short deal, so if it doesn’t work out, the Raiders can find a replacement for him easily.

The 2023 NFL Draft will go from April 27-29 and be held at Union Station in Kansas City, Mo.

March 13-15 is the free agent negotiation period. During that time, starting at 12 p.m. EDT on March 13 and ending at 3:59:59 p.m. EDT on March 15, clubs are permitted to contact and enter into contract negotiations with the certified agents of players who will become Unrestricted Free Agents upon the expiration of their 2022 Player Contracts at 4 p.m EDT on March 15.

The 2023 NFL Year and Free Agency period begins at 4 p.m. EDT on March 15. The Raiders are expected to be significant players in the free-agent market this season.
