Raiders Free Agent Targets: Shaquill Griffin

In this story:
The Las Vegas Raiders are preparing for free agency, looking for ways they can improve the team after a disappointing season.
General Manager Dave Ziegler knows the Raiders’ defense needs to improve, and that there are plenty of free agents on the market he can bring in to help the team try to get back to the playoffs.
The Raiders need to improve their secondary, and one player who can help them do that is former Jacksonville Jaguars cornerback Shaquill Griffin, who was released by the Jaguars on Wednesday in a money-saving move.
Griffin had a couple of solid seasons in Jacksonville and is in the prime of his career. Let’s take a closer look at Griffin and see if he would be a good fit in the Silver and Black.
Griffin was drafted in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft by the Seattle Seahawks out of UCF. He spent four seasons in Seattle, posting solid numbers and being named a 2019 Pro Bowl alternate. That season, he posted 65 tackles and 13 pass breakups.
After the Seahawks did not re-sign him, Griffin signed a three-year contract with the Jaguars. In his first season in Jacksonville, he posted 49 tackles, seven passes defended and a forced fumble.
Griffin was limited to five games this past season due to a back injury. He had one year left on his contract before the Jaguars released him.
When healthy, Griffin is one of the most underrated cornerbacks in the NFL. He is versatile and thrives in coverage while being a good run defender as well. Griffin is also a good decision-maker on the field and does not commit many penalties.
For a team that desperately needs good secondary play, the Raiders could decide to look into signing Griffin. He is only 27 years old and outside of this past season has not missed many games due to injury.
The Raiders can afford to sign Griffin to a multi-year contract if that’s what he’s seeking and might decide to do so as the benefits outweigh the risks.
The 2023 NFL Draft will go from April 27-29 and be held at Union Station in Kansas City, Mo.
March 13-15 is the free agent negotiation period. During that time, starting at 12 p.m. EDT on March 13 and ending at 3:59:59 p.m. EDT on March 15, clubs are permitted to contact and enter into contract negotiations with the certified agents of players who will become Unrestricted Free Agents upon the expiration of their 2022 Player Contracts at 4 p.m EDT on March 15.
The 2023 NFL Year and Free Agency period begins at 4 p.m. EDT on March 15. The Raiders are expected to be significant players in the free-agent market this season.
