Big Week 2 Might Be Required of Hunter Renfrow

Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Hunter Renfrow will need to have a more apparent showing in Week 2 if fellow wideout Jakobi Meyers does not play.

Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Jakobi Meyers' big game in his team's 17-16 victory over the Denver Broncos on Sunday had an unfortunate ending when the first-year Raider went down with a concussion.

With Raiders Coach Josh McDaniels having confirmed to the media Monday that Meyers has entered concussion protocol, the 26-year-old wide receiver's health for Las Vegas' Week 2 game against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday is in jeopardy.

Should Meyers sit out, former Pro Bowler Hunter Renfrow will need to step up as the No. 2 receiver for quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.

Renfrow was not targeted a single time in last Sunday's game, and for the first time in his NFL career, he finished a game without a reception.

While the fifth-year Raider's performance did not show up in the box score, Raiders Offensive Coordinator Mick Lombardi was still high on what Renfrow was able to do without the ball.

"Hunter definitely has been more involved throughout the summer and moving forward," Lombardi told reporters in a virtual press conference Tuesday. "I mean, he was a big part of the game plan in Denver, always a big part of the game plan. It was kind of a weird game how it went in terms of the amount of plays and the amount of series we got. [Renfrow] ran some really good routes on third down. [He] was open on the last play of the game when Jimmy scrambled and stuff like that. So, some days, obviously production in terms of catches and targets is something that I know you guys look at a lot in terms of that type of thing. But I thought Hunter did a good job of doing his job and being ready to go, and [it was] just kind of one of those weird games. 

"I mean, we had six possessions, and one of those was a kneel-down at the end of the half. So, it was a weird game where we used a little bit more 21 and 12 personnel throughout the first half and kind of just felt like we wanted to keep drives going and we had them going. But in terms of Hunter, I mean, he's done a great job in terms of doing his job at practice, and we look forward to kind of getting him integrated here as we move forward."

Lombardi's support of Renfrow is justified, but as one of the league's best slot receivers, he will need to be more of a contributor statistically going forward, especially if Meyers is to sit out.

The Silver and Black remain on the road this week as they travel to play the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, Sept. 17, at 1:05 p.m. EDT/10:05 a.m. PDT.
