Raiders' Inconsistency at QB Doing the Team No Favors

The Las Vegas Raiders have had to start three different quarterbacks so far this season, which isn't exactly part of a recipe for success.

The Las Vegas Raiders have had veteran quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo under center for four and a half games through the first seven weeks of their 2023 campaign.

As if it is not already difficult enough for a player to come in and become the club's new franchise quarterback -- both for them and their teammates -- there's no prior familiarity between the team and its other two backups.

All three of Las Vegas' quarterbacks are in their first year with the team, and all three have started in at least one game this season due to a couple of injuries to Garoppolo, known for being injury-prone in recent years.

While Garoppolo and Raiders quarterback Brian Hoyer have experience in Raiders Coach Josh McDaniels' system from their years in New England, their primary offensive weapons don't share the same familiarity.

"It's always tough when you have multiple different guys in the huddle, calling the play, handling the offense, and all the rest of it," McDaniels told reporters Monday. "That doesn't aid in it. Again, we can't control those circumstances, so we do what we've got to do based on injuries and the health of the team. 

"So, that happens at a lot of spots. Obviously, we'd prefer to have Jimmy in there and just stay in there the whole time, and hopefully, we'll be able to get to that here shortly. But again, regardless of who's playing, I just know that there's a higher level for us, and we've got to get to it."

While the three Raider quarterbacks joined the club this offseason, one thing the Raiders have going for them at the quarterback position is experience. Between Garoppolo and Hoyer, they have 25 years of NFL experience, Garoppolo being in his 10th season and Hoyer being in his 15th. 

Raiders quarterback Aidan O'Connell, of course, is in his rookie season.
