Garoppolo on How McDaniels' System has Evolved

Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is reuniting with Coach Josh McDaniels for the first time in six years.

The Las Vegas Raiders had their joint practice with the San Francisco 49ers this week ahead of their preseason game on Sunday.

Among players who participated in that practice was quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who competed against his former team.

Before he was a 49er, he was a New England Patriot, playing under Coach Josh McDaniels when he was the offensive coordinator. Garoppolo reunites with McDaniels in Las Vegas, hoping to lead the Raiders back to the postseason.

It has been six years since Garoppolo last played in McDaniels’ system, and he addressed the media at training camp about how the system has evolved, and how he is adjusting to it.

“I mean this offense has evolved since I’ve been in it last," Garoppolo said. "Obviously, the core is still the same basic stuff, but yes, it’s grown and it’s been cool just trying to play catch up with it, get on the same page. Having [Brian] Hoyer around, dude who’s been in it a while, being able to talk to him about some of the new stuff, it’s all been helpful. Josh [McDaniels] has been awesome, just the communication. He’s a forward thinker, he gets in front of things and kind of plays from ahead, and I like that.”

If the Raiders want to return to the playoffs in 2023, they will need Garoppolo to quickly re-acclimate to the system and learn the new elements of it. Clearly, he is embracing that challenge, and he has a great chance to get adjusted quickly as he goes through training camp.

The relationship between Garoppolo and McDaniels is something that will be valuable for the Raiders, as their chemistry goes back as far as their years in New England. Garoppolo mentioned McDaniels’ communication with him, which can help him learn the new elements of the system easier.

Garoppolo also has a long-time veteran in his locker room with Brian Hoyer, who has spent significant time with McDaniels as well. Hoyer has been with McDaniels more recently than Garoppolo, so he is familiar with some elements of the system that Garoppolo is not.

With two veteran minds helping him re-learn the system, Garoppolo has a great chance of getting back into the swing of things for the Raiders quickly.

The Silver and Black open the preseason by hosting the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, Aug. 13, at 4 p.m. EDT/1 p.m. PDT.
