How Quickly Can Garoppolo Re-Learn the System?

The Las Vegas Raiders are preparing for the 2023 NFL regular season, with quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo set to lead the offense.

Garoppolo signed a three-year, $72.75-million contract in free agency, the hand-picked selection to be the signal caller by Coach Josh McDaniels and General Manager Dave Ziegler.

McDaniels and Ziegler have familiarity with Garoppolo from when all three were members of the New England Patriots, which played a massive factor in his arrival in Las Vegas.

However, the last time Garoppolo took a snap in a McDaniels-run offensive system was on Jan. 1, 2017 in Week 16 of the 2016-17 season against the Miami Dolphins. The last time he played starter snaps was Week 2 of that season against the Dolphins.

It has been over six years since Garoppolo has been in the McDaniels system, and has since played with the San Francisco 49ers in Kyle Shanahan’s system, which is different from McDaniels’.

Garoppolo’s ability to work his way back into McDaniels’ system will be an important element to watch for the Raiders’ offense as they progress through training camp and into the regular season.

While it seems simple that Garoppolo could jump right back into the system and be full speed ahead, it may be a bit more complicated than that.

Garoppolo played much more in San Francisco with Shanahan than he ever did with McDaniels in New England, so essentially unlearning a system he ran for six seasons might not be an overnight fix.

It would be surprising to see Garoppolo struggle to re-learn the system though, as it is a system with which he does have a fair level of familiarity. He also has several weapons in place to make his transition much easier.

As the Raiders look to get back to the postseason in year two under McDaniels, they have chosen Garoppolo to be the quarterback to help lead them there. It will be notable to see how quickly he can get comfortable again in McDaniels’ system.

If he can jump back in with the offense and start clicking immediately, the Raiders’ offense will be much better for it. If not, it might take some time for the entire offense to find its footing.
