McDaniels Has Luxury of Close Connection With Ziegler

If you're familiar with this latest Las Vegas Raiders regime, you know that General Manager Dave Ziegler and Coach Josh McDaniels have a connection that goes way back.

The two consider themselves to be good friends, which allows organizational decisions to be made relatively easier than they would for most other teams.

"Dave's a great partner for me and super well prepared," McDaniels said at the NFL Combine on Tuesday. "Really, ahead in terms of what's coming next in our calendar year. And just has really been refreshing for me to -- you know, when I'm not at a certain point, I ask a question, Dave's got the answer. And we can -- the healthiest part of our relationship is we can agree and sometimes we can disagree, and we can work through those things and figure out what's best for the team. And I don't think, really, either one of us has an ego, whose decision it was. It's our decision. And you know, we're going to try to do what's best for the team."

McDaniels and Ziegler worked together when they were each with the Denver Broncos, the former having been the head coach and the latter having been a player personnel assistant.

They later reunited in New England, McDaniels having served as the offensive coordinator and Ziegler having held the positions of assistant director of pro scouting, director of pro personnel, assistant director of player personnel and director of player personnel.

The 2023 NFL Draft will go from April 27-29 and be held at Union Station in Kansas City, Mo. On March 7, 2023, before 4 p.m. EST, is the club's deadline to designate Franchise or Transition Players.

March 13-15 is the free agent negotiation period. Starting at 12 p.m. EDT on March 13 and ending at 3:59:59 p.m. EDT on March 15, clubs are permitted to contact and enter into contract negotiations with the certified agents of players who will become Unrestricted Free Agents upon the expiration of their 2022 Player Contracts at 4 p.m. EDT on March 15.

The 2023 NFL Year and Free Agency period begins at 4 p.m. EDT on March 15. The Raiders are expected to be significant players in the free-agent market this season.
