McDaniels, Goff Set For Second Meeting Since SB LIII

In this story:
The Las Vegas Raiders have another tough quarterback they will need to contain on Monday when they go up against Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff.
This won't be the first time Raiders Coach Josh McDaniels has faced Goff in a prime-time setting, as his New England Patriots defeated Goff and the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl LIII when McDaniels was New England's offensive coordinator.
Goff passed for 229 yards as his team lost 13-3, allowing the Patriots to win their sixth Super Bowl title in franchise history.
McDaniels' Patriots also went up against Goff's Rams in a Thursday Night Football game in 2020, when Los Angeles came away victorious, 24-3.
Monday's game will be the next chapter in this series of meetings between McDaniels' teams and Goff. Still, the second-year Raiders coach is well aware that he will be seeing a better version of the Lions quarterback compared to the one he saw in Super Bowl LIII.
"I think this guy [Goff], obviously, has been a -- he's had a really good career so far," McDaniels said when he addressed the media on Thursday. "Early in his career there were a lot of deep throws, a lot of deep balls, lot of big plays. Obviously, L.A. had an incredibly explosive team, and he was a big part of why that was that way.
"I think, if anything, as he's matured, you see his efficiency go up. His decision-making is really good; he doesn't make a lot of mistakes with the ball. He's aggressive when he should be, and he's really smart and protects the ball if something's not there.
"So, just a -- I see a really good football player. He really has matured and improved as his career has gone on. Obviously, he's been in two different places with two different schemes relative to what they used to do in L.A.
"So, I just have a lot of respect for him. I think he's a really good player, and obviously, it will be a big challenge for us on Monday."
The Silver and Black will stay on the road to take on the Detroit Lions on Monday night, Oct. 30, at 8:15 p.m. EDT/5:15 p.m. PDT.
