Josh McDaniels Shares Thoughts on Marcus Peters Signing

The Las Vegas Raiders were able to sign veteran cornerback Marcus Peters only a day before the start of their training camp.

Cornerback Marcus Peters is a veteran that any coach would want to have on his team.

Not only does Peters have a considerable amount of experience in the National Football League, but he is still at a point in his career where he can play at his peak.

Only a day after the Las Vegas Raiders signed Peters to a one-year deal, Coach Josh McDaniels opened up about the signing when he addressed the media on Monday.

"It's an exciting opportunity, and Marcus [Peters] has been a very decorated player for the entirety of his career for the teams that he's played for," McDaniels said. "He's always been a guy that -- I've coached against him a number of times, and when you're playing against him, you always know where he's at, because there's a chance you might not want to throw at him. And again, players earn that opportunity and earn that status, not coaches or anybody else. He's just a very intelligent football player. 

"We had multiple opportunities to sit down and talk with him, he's very bright, understands the game, is really a mature, intelligent guy in terms of defensive structure, coverages, reading route patterns, etc. Very impressed with that, and he wants to be a Raider. So it was exciting for us to be able to make that happen, and I'm excited to put him in with our group, and I know he's eager to get to work." 

Peters enters his ninth NFL season and most recently was a member of the Baltimore Ravens, having totaled 99 combined tackles, three for losses, two sacks, 25 passes defensed, eight interceptions, two of which were returned for touchdowns, and 203 return yards.

Peters is a three-time Pro Bowler, a two-time Associated Press All-Pro First Team selection, and was the 2015 AP Defensive Rookie of the Year.

He was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft.

The Silver and Black open the preseason by hosting the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, Aug. 13, at 4 p.m. EDT/1 p.m. PDT.
