The Las Vegas Raiders will have a new-look offense in the 2023 season.

With a new quarterback, new players at tight end and wide receiver, and potentially a couple more faces at running back, the Raiders will look much different on that side of the ball this season.

With new personnel that more closely resembles the system Coach Josh McDaniels hopes to run to its most significant efficacy, the Raiders’ play-calling in 2023 may be much more balanced than in 2022.

The Raiders threw the ball on almost 58 percent of their plays last season to a little more than 42 percent of running plays. McDaniels’ team attempted 586 passes last season, which ranked just outside the top 10 in the NFL. They ran the ball 428 times, which ranked just outside the bottom 10.

While star running back Josh Jacobs was one of the most effective rushers in the NFL when he touched the ball last season, the Raiders only ran the ball the 12th-fewest times in the league.

With Jimmy Garoppolo replacing Derek Carr at quarterback, the possibility of a shift in philosophy now seems more apparent. McDaniels might shift to a running back-by-committee scheme if Jacobs were to miss any time due to his contract extension impasse with the team.

Garoppolo has had success in these kinds of schemes in the past. The San Francisco 49ers, his former team, were one of the most dynamic rushing attacks in the NFL during his time there, along with having elite pass-catching weapons such as Deebo Samuel and George Kittle.

The Raiders would not have to abandon throwing the ball altogether. However, they would not have to be as reliant on success through the air as last season.

Some of the most successful offenses in the NFL were balanced in their running and passing plays. The Philadelphia Eagles, the highest-scoring team in the NFC last season, had only eight more rushing attempts than passing attempts.

Now that the personnel on McDaniels’ offense is a little more tailored to his liking, he has a chance to balance out his play-calling and have the Raiders’ offense operating as efficiently as possible.
