Las Vegas Raiders Coach Josh McDaniels believes that the best ability is availability. Durability and availability were two of the biggest reasons McDaniels and the Raiders signed linebacker Robert Spillane, as the veteran rarely misses games.

Spillane has played every single defensive play of this Raiders' season through six games. That's a vast difference from last season when Las Vegas' middle linebacker missed several games.

Spillane has put the work in to become a better all-around linebacker. Specifically, his pass defense has improved. This season, he is statistically one of the best linebackers in the league, allowing only a 50.2 percent passer rating when targeted.

With Spillane as the green dot, Las Vegas' defense has reached heights not seen in years by a Raider defense.

"I mean, this guy is a football player through and through," McDaniels said. "He's a true professional, really tough, smart, cares a lot about all the details in the game. He's a connector. I think that's why he was voted as a captain so quickly.

"I mean, there is really not anybody who doesn't relate to Spill in some way, shape or form. He can talk to anybody."

Spillane's football knowledge and communication ability have helped the defense improve in many areas. His leadership and experience have been key factors in why the defense has taken a jump this season.

"He communicates with the secondary well and the front," McDaniels said. "He takes control of everything in practice and wants it done right. He understands when there's a mistake made; he's very smart.

"So, just a lot of confidence with him having the green dot, being able to really set the table for our defense, understand situational football," McDaniels said. "There are really not a lot of things you can say that are negative about Spill. I mean, they're all positive. We're just really happy we got him."

Las Vegas might have found a diamond in the rough with the emergence of Spillane. His continued growth would equal an even more improved defense.

The Silver and Black will head on the road to take on the Chicago Bears on Sunday, Oct. 22, at 1:05 p.m. EDT/10:05 a.m. PDT.
