Raiders Need to be Ready to Counter Chiefs' Trick Plays

The Kansas City Chiefs are perhaps the best team in the NFL when it comes to trick plays, a specialty the Las Vegas Raiders will be expecting to see on Week 16.

It's no accident that the Kansas City Chiefs have won seven straight division titles and two Super Bowls in the last decade.

You can point to a number of reasons as to why that has been the case, and most would say it comes down to their two future Hall of Famers -- quarterback Patrick Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce. But there's no question coaching plays a huge role as well.

The Chiefs are led by one of the best coaches of his era, two-time Super Bowl champion Andy Reid, who has led two different franchises to the big game in February.

One of the specialties of Reid and Kansas City that has made the Chiefs so unstoppable in recent years is their execution of trick plays.

For the Las Vegas Raiders, who will already be tested as it is when they face the defending world champions on Christmas Day, combating trick plays could be a major key in their attempt for a holiday victory.

Raiders Interim Coach Antonio Pierce knows when it comes to Reid, there's no right way to prepare for trick plays.

"I mean, he's [Reid] got a million of them," Pierce told reporters on Wednesday. "Every time you think you've seen one and you've seen it all, here comes another one. And they're creative, they have fun doing it. That's good.

"But obviously, at the end of the day, you have to do your job, right? So, most of the time, where are those trick plays coming? On the Fringe, in the red zone, near the goal line.

"So, I mean, come on, we're alert to it already, right? So, that's been talked about in meetings as we're going forward throughout the week. And that's just about everybody being attentive.

"Like, there's no need to run up the field in this kind of game, right? They get down there -- we saw it last time we played them -- they ran the ball in. We don't want that to happen.

"If they don't run it in, here comes the gadgets -- we saw the ring around the rosie deal they did last year. All fun and games, cool. But at some point, the best way to stop a trick play is to do what? Hit it in the mouth."

The Silver and Black will return to action versus their AFC West rivals, the Kansas City Chiefs, on Christmas Day at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. Don't miss it on Monday, December 25, at 1 p.m. EST/10 a.m. PST.
