Raiders Will Face Great Guard in Chargers' Salyer

The Las Vegas Raiders must find ways to generate pressure against the Los Angeles Chargers' offensive line, but that will be tough against Jamaree Salyer.

The Las Vegas Raiders are traveling to SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif., to take on their division rival, the Los Angeles Chargers this Sunday.

Both teams are looking to pick up their second victory of the season, as losing three out of the first four games of the season does not create an ideal outlook for the rest of the year.

The Chargers’ offensive line has allowed seven sacks through three games this season, and the Raiders’ defensive line has five sacks. This is a chance for the Raiders to win the battle in the trenches.

One player who has been outstanding for the Chargers is their second-year right guard, Jamaree Salyer.

Salyer was a sixth-round selection in the 2022 NFL Draft out of Georgia who stepped into the starting left tackle spot last season after All-Pro tackle Rashawn Slater was lost for the season.

A sixth-round rookie stepping into a starting left tackle spot seems like a tall task, but Salyer handled it exceptionally well. He played almost 1,000 snaps and had a Pro Football Focus pass blocking grade of 75.9. His overall grade was 69.2 which, considering the role he was asked to play, is impressive.

Overall, Salyer finished the season by allowing 46 total pressures, 10 quarterback hits and five sacks. This season, with Slater healthy, Salyer has moved to right guard, as it would have been hard to keep him out of the starting lineup considering the rookie season he had.

Salyer has allowed only five pressures, two quarterback hits and one sack through three games this season, and has maintained his high pass blocking abilities. Salyer is a massive 6-foot-4 and 325 pounds, with great length and footwork, and his strong hands allow him to stonewall interior rushers.

The Raiders need to find ways to create pressure on the interior, and that will prove difficult against Salyer. Football games are won in the trenches, and so far this season, Salyer has done his part to help the Chargers.

If the Raiders can find ways to beat Salyer inside, they have a better chance of controlling the line of scrimmage and creating defensive opportunities.

The Silver and Black return to the road this week in Inglewood, Calif., to play the Los Angeles Chargers (1-2) on Sunday, Oct. 1, at 4:05 p.m. EDT/1:05 p.m. PDT.
