Garoppolo to Meyers Connection Strong Already

Las Vegas Raiders' Jimmy Garoppolo is surrounded by talent. His connection with Jakobi Meyers is easy to see.

Jakobi Meyers led the Las Vegas Raiders in receiving with nine receptions for 81 yards and two touchdowns against the Broncos. Meyers' two-touchdown performance was the first time he's scored two touchdowns in the same game since being drafted in 2019.

In just one game, it was clear why Las Vegas decided to bring Meyers in. For a defense to worry about Meyers, Davante Adams, and the other pass-catching options the Raiders have is a lot to ask. 

As talented as Meyers is, he has also been putting in the work all offseason to be prepared. His quarterback, Jimmy Garoppolo, has taken notice and already begun what should be a special connection with his new weapons on offense.

“Jakobi [Meyers] has been very consistent, honestly," Garoppolo said. "He's the same guy every day, comes out, puts in the work, and as a quarterback when you have a guy like that, it makes it easy, you can trust them." 

"But I thought a lot of guys stepped up. [WR] Davante [Adams] had some big plays for us, really got that touchdown drive at the end started for us, deep out route, so many people stepped up in different ways. 

"‘Hoop’ (TE Austin Hooper) had a big catch on that drive, I mean, [RB] Josh Jacobs blocked his ass off. It was a lot of good stuff today.”

Garoppolo, Meyers, and the Raiders offense worked feverishly to mesh together, as it was Garoppolo's first game back on the field since last year. Meyer and Garoppolo looked like they had played together for more than one game on both touchdown passes.

“It was pretty satisfying, not going to lie," Garoppolo said. "We've been working on that one, got the look we wanted, and we were both on the same page, so we just made it work. He made a hell of a catch, a hell of a route, he had a good celebration I heard. I haven't seen it yet.”

Meyers led the New England Patriots in receiving for three consecutive seasons, with quarterbacks that were not as good as Garoppolo. Now that he is with the minds of McDaniels and Mick Lombardi and playing with the talent the Raiders possess on offense, Meyers is primed to reach even newer heights.

The Silver and Black remain on the road next week as they travel to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, Sept. 17, at 1:05 p.m. EDT/10:05 a.m. PDT.
