Objectives for Each Raiders Offensive Position Group

What does each offensive position group on the Las Vegas Raiders need to do in order to have a successful season?

As the Las Vegas Raiders prepare for the 2023 NFL regular season, they will look vastly different on the offensive side of the ball.

General Manager Dave Ziegler and Coach Josh McDaniels began to build the team in their vision, bringing in several new faces to help run McDaniels’ system more efficiently.

The Raiders are looking to return to the postseason in 2023, after missing the playoffs in McDaniels’ first season as head coach of the Silver and Black.

Each position group on offense will have different objectives of what they need to do in order to have a successful season, so let’s take a closer look at what those are.

Quarterback: Stay Healthy -- Jimmy Garoppolo’s main objective this season is to stay on the field for as long as possible. He has dealt with several injuries throughout his career, some of them severe.

With Garoppolo on the field, teams he has quarterbacked have been notably successful. The Raiders gave him a big contract this offseason and they will need him on the field producing with his new teammates if the team wants to have any chance of making the postseason.

Running Backs: Ancillary Production -- While Josh Jacobs is still away from the team and his future is unclear, if he returns to the Raiders, he will need some help behind him.

Last season, the Raiders’ second-leading rusher was quarterback Derek Carr with only 102 yards. They will need more help from their depth backs, like second-year man Zamir White and Ameer Abdullah. The more players having success running the ball, the better.

Wide Receivers: Make Garoppolo’s Job Easy -- The Raiders added several wide receivers this offseason, including Jakobi Meyers, who spent three seasons with McDaniels in New England.

While Davante Adams probably will put up another excellent season, players like Meyers and Hunter Renfrow will be important in making Garoppolo’s job easy. Meyers and Renfrow are players who can thrive in the short field, where Garoppolo is most accurate.

Tight Ends: Expand the Passing Game -- Rookie tight end Michael Mayer was viewed as arguably the top tight end prospect in the 2023 NFL Draft, and expectations are high for the Notre Dame record-setter.

Mayer gives the Raiders a dynamic pass-catching threat at tight end after the team traded Darren Waller. Mayer's ability to thrive as a pass catcher anywhere on the field gives Garoppolo another reliable set of hands to throw to. Austin Hooper, Jesper Horsted and Jacob Hollister should factor in as well.

Offensive Line: Build Off of 2022 -- The Raiders’ offensive line was not expected to be a very good unit in 2022. However, they performed surprisingly well, ranked as a top 10 unit at the end of the season by Pro Football Focus.

Left tackle Kolton Miller leads the way for the offense up front, with guard Dylan Parham looking to build off his rookie season. The right tackle spot should have competition, but whoever wins the job shouldn’t skip a beat.

If the Raiders can consistently get a push up front and protect Garoppolo, their offense should be better than expected.
