Raiders Must Continue Offensive Aggressiveness

The Las Vegas Raiders must continue to be aggressive offensively if they want to stay alive in the NFL playoff race.

In this story:

The Las Vegas Raiders are coming off a dominant performance against the Los Angeles Chargers on Thursday Night Football, putting up a franchise-record 63 points.

Despite chatter that rookie quarterback Aidan O’Connell could be replaced as the starter, he came out strong, passing for 248 yards and four touchdowns, all in the first half. He had four passing touchdowns all season coming into the game.

O’Connell completed passes to six different receivers, helping tight end Michael Mayer and wide receiver Tre Tucker have career-best games.

However, despite this offensive explosion, the Raiders (6-8) find themselves on the outside looking in at the AFC playoff picture. Las Vegas wants to play postseason football, but with only three games left in the regular season against tough opponents, they will have to play nearly flawless football to make that happen.

Interim Coach Antonio Pierce made headlines for his “press the gas pedal even harder” quip to sideline reporter Kaylee Hartung, but that’s exactly what the Raiders did in the second half of the game. They were still taking shots downfield, looking to score despite having a 42-0 lead.

This is precisely the mindset the Raiders’ offense needs to have if the Silver and Black want to actualize their postseason goals. They must continue to be aggressive and take risks to score points and win games.

O’Connell is a quarterback who usually does not take unnecessary risks and takes care of the football. Still, he was pushing the ball downfield consistently against the Chargers’ defense, which has allowed the most passing yards in the league this season.

The Raiders play the Kansas City Chiefs in their next game, and their defense has allowed the third-most passing yards in the league. O’Connell cannot be afraid to take chances against the Chiefs’ young secondary.

The Indianapolis Colts rank 15th in the league against the pass, and the Denver Broncos rank eighth. After Kansas City, the Raiders will face these two formidable pass defenses.

The Raiders have the playmakers on offense to take shots and be aggressive. Davante Adams is one of the best receivers in football, Tre Tucker is a downfield threat and Jakobi Meyers is having a career season. Mayer continues to come on in the offense.

With their backs against the wall, the Raiders have to continue to play with the offensive aggressiveness that they displayed against the Chargers. If they don’t, they won’t have as many opportunities to score, which will not put them in favorable positions to win games.

The Silver and Black will return to action versus their AFC West rivals, the Kansas City Chiefs, on Christmas Day at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. Don't miss it on Monday, December 25, at 1 p.m. EST/10 a.m. PST.
