Hiring Telesco Adds Experience to Raiders Front Office

In this story:
The Las Vegas Raiders hired a first-time Coach Antonio Pierce and now have hired Tom Telesco as their general manager. While the Raiders interviewed candidates for their head coaching position, much was made about Pierce's professional inexperience as a head coach.
Pierce's only experience was the nine games he coached during the second half of this last season. The rookie coach went 5-4 with a rookie quarterback and a rookie offensive coordinator, respectable by any measure. The Raiders ended the season with inexperience at many more positions than only their head coaching position.
Telesco joins the Raiders after spending over a decade in different positions with the Indianapolis Colts and the San Diego/Los Angeles Chargers, respectively.
During that time, Telesco was responsible for finding both organizations' star players such as Justin Herbert and Andrew Luck, as well as lesser-known players who didn't enter the league with much publicity but turned into well-known, productive players.
Those include players such as running back Austin Ekeler. Telesco has successfully used the NFL Draft, free agency, and trades to bring in top talent to rosters he has overseen.
Pierce's inexperience has been rightfully brought up many times over the last few weeks. The Raiders' deciding to hire Telesco for their general manager spot helps make up for some of Pierce's inexperience as a head coach.
While Champ Kelly is undoubtedly experienced in roles similar to the general manager position and gained even more experience as the Raiders' Interim General Manager this season, Telesco and Kelly will certainly work better together than alone.
Kelly's knowledge of how things have worked for the Raiders since he's been there and the players currently on the roster, combined with Telesco's many years of experience and dealings as a general manager, give the Raiders two capable minds that can take care of arguably the most crucial job in an organization, which is finding and bringing in the best players possible.
At the very least, the Raiders have a general manager with plenty of experience. They also have Kelly under contract, unless he is hired for an available manager position elsewhere.
With Telesco and Kelly working together, it will only make Pierce's job that much easier.
From February 27 to March 4, 2024, the NFL Scouting Combine will be held at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Ind.
The NFL Draft will be held in Detroit, Mich., on April 25-27, 2024. The Las Vegas Raiders currently hold the No. 13 overall pick.
