Raiders Young WRs Taking Advantage of Opportunity

With Davante Adams and Hunter Renfrow out of practice, the Las Vegas Raiders' young wide receivers had an opportunity to showcase their talent.

With Davante Adams suffering an apparent injury during joint practice with the San Francisco 49ers and Hunter Renfrow also being out, the Las Vegas Raiders’ young wide receivers had a chance to step up and get more reps.

The preseason is a chance for young players to experience real, in-game snaps and showcase their talent to their coaching staff. For a rookie like Tre Tucker, who was a third-round selection in the 2023 NFL Draft, his speed will truly be on display.

One of the Raiders’ free agent acquisitions, wide receiver Jakobi Meyers, addressed the media at training camp and spoke about how valuable it is for young players to get those kinds of reps.

“I mean that’s actually a really big part of camp in my opinion,” Meyers said. “For a guy who was undrafted kind of waiting on his moment, these are the days you kind of -- you don’t want anybody to get hurt, but when somebody does go down then it’s your moment. You’ve got to step up and go out there and show coach what you can do with that new opportunity. So, I mean I’m proud of the guys because a lot of them were out there with no break, going straight through, pushing hard. So, a lot of people showed what they were made of today, and hopefully they can just keep building on that day by day.”

As he mentioned, Meyers was an undrafted free agent, and he earned an opportunity to play early on with the New England Patriots in 2019. Meyers would eventually turn that opportunity into a big contract with the Raiders.

Tucker is the youngest receiver in the room at 22 years old, and with Adams and Renfrow not expected to play much if at all in the Raiders’ preseason game against the 49ers, should have a great opportunity to earn snaps and carve out a role for himself going forward.

Meyers is a veteran and can use his knowledge and experience to help young players like Tucker as he prepares for his first real NFL action in the preseason against the 49ers. 

The Silver and Black open the preseason by hosting the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, Aug. 13, at 4 p.m. EDT/1 p.m. PDT.
