Raiders' Simmons Has Weapons To Lead Resurgent DBs

In this story:
HENDERSON, Nev.--It is no secret that in 2022, the Las Vegas Raiders defensive backfield was the Achilles heel of the Silver and Black attack.
Jason Simmons, a 10-year NFL veteran as a player, is now the Las Vegas Raiders Defensive Passing Game Coordinator and his 11th year as an NFL coach. His experience understanding what it takes to be a successful NFL player revealed a practical approach to helping his players as he strives to empower them to reach their fullest potential.
The Pittsburgh Steelers drafted Jason Simmons in the fifth round of the 1998 NFL Draft, and he now serves in his current role for the Raiders.
Simmons' ability to create an environment of trust and mutual respect between players and coaches is instrumental if the Raiders hope to establish current success in 2023.
I sat down with Simmons for a lengthy interview about the Silver and Black defensive secondary. Unlike his assistant Chris Ash, who did not explain the failures of 2022 and had no answers for 2023, Simmons was open, sincere, and honest about what he wants and is looking for this season.
You can watch the interview in its entirety below:
No topic was off limits as we discussed a myriad of issues, including:
· Trevon Moehrig took a step back in 2022 from his promising 2021 rookie season; what do you want moving forward to get him back on track?
· Trevon Moehrig has the skills to be great; one of them is humility. How does that impact his future?
· Nate Hobbs, like Moehrig, also took a step back in 2022 from his rookie 2021 season. We know he had injuries, but does he need to return to the inside?
· Sam Webb, an undrafted free agent, caught the team's attention as a rookie in 2022. What does he bring to this team?
· Marcus Epps was an underrated free agent signing. What was it like when Dave Ziegler announced his signing?
· Effort, Communication, and Discipline are the Raiders' mantra on defense in 2023; how is that being embraced?
· Chris Smith might not physically have the intangibles, but he has had nothing but success, and what does he bring to the Silver and Black?
· The Raiders have a packed defensive backs room full of quality players. They will cut players in 2023 that will end up on other teams’ rosters. With the NFL being a numbers game, how does that improve the Raiders?
· Simmons offers a detailed explanation of what it means to flip your hips.
· Jakorian Bennett is only a rookie, but plays like a linebacker, and he has a skillset that can be impressive. How hard will the adjustment be for him from college to the NFL?
