Raiders Insider Podcast: Reviewing & Grading Day Two

HENDERSON, Nev.--The Las Vegas Raiders had an interesting day two of the 2023 NFL Draft.

They selected tight end Michael Mayer from Notre Dame, plus defensive lineman Byron Young from the Alabama Crimson Tide and wide receiver Tre Tucker from the Cincinnati Bearcats.

According to General Manager Dave Ziegler, they had Mayer in their top-15 players on the NFL Draft board before the event, so getting him in the second round was an absolute steal.

Ziegler also wanted to upgrade the interior force of the rushing defense. He did that when he selected Young. Young was durable playing on a team loaded with talent, yet he didn't have all the numbers fans would expect because he wasn't asked to play as much with so much talent around him.

Young instantly bolsters the Silver and Black rushing defense, and because of the talent around him, he didn't get to pass rush as much as others. Ziegler feels his lack of experience does not indicate his talent, and the Raiders sincerely felt they stole him.

Finally, the Raiders took Tucker from Cincinnati with their last selection of the night. Tucker possesses rare speed and is tough. He is a small rangy wide receiver that reminds the Raiders of Julian Edelman.

While many fans were disappointed with the picks of Young and Tucker based on what they found on the internet saying their draft value was, both players were coached at the Senior Bowl by members of the Raiders staff.

Ziegler said both men were ranked higher on their NFL Draft board than where they were picked, based on that lengthy interaction.
