Defensive End Maxx Crosby
Q: I saw you talking to big Robert Havenstein over there, underrated tackle in this league, but when you get a chance to work against other players like that, and then be able to talk to them afterward, how valuable is that?
Crosby: "I love it. Me and Rob [Havenstein], we went against each other in camp two years ago, we played against each other last year in the season. So yeah, we're constantly just talking, and he's asking me questions, I'm asking him questions, and just about the little things, the little details. He's asking me what am I seeing, how am I keying the ball, am keying his heel, am I keying the little things, and we just go back and forth. So, anytime we get to have those conversations, like last week with Trent Williams, it's the same thing. We're just trying to improve, and that's what I try to do every day."
Q: You get started a little bit slow, your teammates talked about it. And then you got a little bit vocal about picking up the pace and they responded. How happy were you to see the way they responded and the way this team finished?
Crosby: "Every single day, you've got an opportunity to get better. There's no staying the same, so you get better or you get worse. So for me, I try to bring that juice -- not try -- I bring that juice every single day. And I want my teammates to feel that, and if I've got to go out there and take matters in my own hands, I could do it in different ways. So, that's what I try to do, no matter what. I try to be the light, try to be the example in every single way I can."
Q: We watched you grab the rookie and talk to Tyree Wilson just a little bit, but I'm just curious, are you finding him to be teachable? He seems to keep his eyes on you.
Crosby: "No doubt, no doubt. This was his first day out there with us. So, he wasn't able to go in team and things like that, but you see him asking a ton of questions and getting better. So, it's awesome to see him out there with us."
Q: You mentioned kind of wanting to pick up the energy a little bit more. Is that kind of chasing after the ball a little bit when you got into it with Cam Akers, was it just kind of trying to get the energy up?
Crosby: 'I was just doing what I do, and he didn't like that. So, he got what he got, it is what it is."
Q: Talking to some guys, they weren't happy with today's performance overall. In the whole scheme of things, is that a good thing, a positive view that they understood that the standard wasn't the standard today and that they need to do better?
Crosby: "Yeah, no question. The standard is you show up and get better. So yeah, I don't know. For me as a leader, it's unacceptable. You see guys not being at their best, but there's an opportunity tomorrow to get better. So, I'm looking forward to everybody getting out there and getting better."
Q: I don't know if it's possible for you to get up more than what you typically do in practice, but do you get up more for these joint practices like this?
Crosby: "I'm the same guy every single day. Every time I come in here, I come to get better. So, some days you're going to feel like shit, some days you're gonna feel great. It is what it is, you've got to get better and find ways to improve. Those are the days you get better, when you don't feel like you want to go. When you're feeling bad for yourself, that's when you've really got to go to that dark place. So, for me, no matter what it is, I'm trying to get to that place no matter what and just bring my teammates with me."
Q: At the end of the team sessions there, I saw you come out to the field and speak with Josh McDaniels. Can you share any of what you and he talked about? Crosby:
"No, we talked about a lot of things, but I love Coach. We have a lot of great conversations."
The Silver and Black return to preseason action when they play the Los Angeles Rams at SoFi Stadium on Saturday, Aug. 19, at 9 p.m. EDT/6 p.m. PDT.
