Raiders 2022 Defensive Secondary Can't Repeat in 2023

Raiders Defensive Backs Coach Chris Ash and the unit he leads didn't have a successful 2022, he didn't want to discuss it, and didn't have answers for 2023.

HENDERSON, Nev.--The 2022 Las Vegas Raiders defensive secondary was one of the worst units in football, evidenced by a season that ended with a dismal 6-11 record. 

A large part of the team’s lack of defensive success was mainly due to the poor performances of the defensive backs, who often lacked the technical skills necessary to make consistent plays. 

This lack of success prompted many questions about the organizational decisions that led to this outcome. Many believed the coaching staff had not done enough to help the unit’s development, and the Raiders’ coaching was also a significant factor in the secondary’s woes. 

Furthermore, the Raiders had to rely heavily on young players from the ranks of undrafted free agents, and NFL Draft, to fill the gap, often with mixed results.

All this led to the defensive secondary costing the Raiders dearly throughout the season, as the team ultimately failed to make the playoffs with a team many had projected to repeat their 2021 success and return to the NFL Playoffs.

The Las Vegas Raiders' defensive secondary was not the most potent unit during the 2022 season. Overall, the unit was under-performing regarding play calling, schemes, and the ability to execute the game plan. Coaching decisions played a significant part in the defensive secondary's struggles, with play calling and schemes resulting in more complete passes and big plays than hoped.

In conclusion, the 2022 Las Vegas Raiders defensive secondary was one of the worst units in football, as evidenced by their record-low rankings in yards allowed and touchdowns allowed.

The Raiders organization's decisions to forego signing any notable players in free agency, with the coaching to play an overly conservative defensive style, and the lack of team chemistry all contributed to their failed season. Poor communication and miscommunication plagued the defense all season, resulting in multiple losses that could have been prevented. 

Through free agency and the NFL Draft, Coach Josh McDaniels and General Manager Dave Ziegler have made significant upgrades this offseason to the Raiders organization. The 2022 defensive secondary season exemplifies how key organization and coaching can make or break a season.
