Tom-pa Bay Lives? Rams Coach Thomas Brown Lands Another OC Interview
One champion Tom leaves, another takes his place? That's what the Tampa Bay Buccaneers could be planning.
The team made one of its first relatively big moves of the post-Tom Brady era on Saturday, interviewing Los Angeles Rams assistant head coach Thomas Brown for its vacant offensive coordinator slot. Tampa Bay, fresh off a division title that yielded an instant playoff loss to Dallas, is looking to replace the ousted Byron Leftwich after he was fired in January.
Brown has been a popular candidate amongst teams looking to fill coaching vacancies, having gone through several discussions after the end of the regular season. That includes head coaching interviews with Houston though the spot has since been filled by former San Francisco defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans.
It's perhaps not surprising to see why Brown is so coveted amongst teams looking to find wearers for its top headsets: in addition to the apparent trend of hiring Sean McVay's assistants, Brown has held a variety of roles during the Rams' recent run of prosperity (2020-present). That stretch includes his time as the running backs coach en route to last year's Super Bowl, which saw Sony Michel and Darrell Henderson unite for 1,533 yards en route to a Vince Lombardi Trophy hoist.
The Rams have served as Brown's first locale for an NFL job, as he previously held similar rushing supervisor positions on the collegiate level at Chattanooga, Marshall, Wisconsin, his alma mater of Georgia, Miami, and South Carolina.
Brown is one of eight public candidates for the role of Tampa's offensive boss, joining names like his fellow Georgia coach Todd Monken (currently the national champion Bulldogs' offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach) and Cincinnati Bengals quarterbacks coach and Rams Super Bowl opponent Dan Pitcher.
