Rams Hold 9 Picks Entering Day 3 of NFL Draft

After trading back twice on Day 2 of the 2023 NFL Draft, the Los Angeles Rams have nine picks remaining entering Day 3, among the most in the league.

In recent years, the Los Angeles Rams have had very little draft capital to work with after trading for multiple star players. In 2023, though, the exact opposite is true.

While the Rams didn't have their first-round pick again due to the Matthew Stafford trade, they are making up for it later in the draft. They had three Day 2 picks, including two in the third round. Now entering Day 3, the Rams have nine picks remaining, among the most in the league.

One of the reasons the Rams have so many picks is due to multiple trades on Friday night. First, they traded the No. 69 pick to the Houston Texans for picks No. 73 and No. 161 picks. Then they traded the No. 73 pick to the New York Giants for picks No. 89 and No. 128.

The Rams originally had a massive gap between two of their picks, from No. 77 in the third round to No. 167 in the fifth. With their trades on Friday night, they have effectively closed that gap.

"There were a couple times, even later in draft we could have traded back but we decided to stay put and we at least found this one spot between third and fifth round," general manager Les Snead said. "That was important. We talked about it and had an opportunity to trade back at each pick and what was interesting is that we probably stayed put at probably two picks? I'm not sure, seems like we traded a lot there in the third."

The Rams' nine picks on Day 3 are tied with the Green Bay Packers for the second-most in the league. The only team with more than them is the Jacksonville Jaguars with 10. All three teams have traded back twice during the draft, with Green Bay doing so in the second round and Jacksonville in the first.

L.A. still has plenty of needs to address entering Day 3, even after beefing up the trenches on Day 2. With the amount of picks they have, though, they'll have plenty of chances to fill those needs.
