Giants QB Situation in Flux vs. Rams?

The New York Giants made a QB change against the Eagles on Monday, and it is unclear whether that will stick against the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday.

After starting the season 3-7, the Los Angeles Rams are in the midst of making an incredible late-season playoff push, now sitting at 8-7, and just two wins away from potentially sealing up a Wild Card spot.

Standing in their way this week are the New York Giants, who are coming into the game after a disappointing loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Christmas Day.

In that game, the Giants made a quarterback change, subbing in Tyrod Taylor in place of Tommy DeVito, who was making his seventh straight start in place of injured starter, Daniel Jones.

And now, after some indecisive comments from Giants head coach Brian Daboll, it is unclear who the Giants will go with when the Rams come to town on Sunday.

Tyrod Taylor

“I’m just worried about tonight here," Daboll said when asked about the QB situation. "We’ll talk about that here this week.”

DeVito, who was pulled after going 9 of 16 for 55 yards and the Giants trailing 20-3 in the third quarter, had started the last six games for New York including Monday afternoon.

He had led the Giants to a 3-3 record over that time, including three-straight wins over Washington, New England and Green Bay. But, after a slow start on Monday, Daboll felt the team needed a spark, prompting the switch to the veteran Taylor.

“Just tried to spark the team," Daboll said. "I don’t really have anything else to add to that. I just did it to try to spark the team.”

Now, with the season ostensibly over for the Giants, and the playoffs on the line for the Rams, the only question is - who will Daboll go with on Sunday?

Conventional wisdom would suggest DeVito, who has been solid for the most part over his eight total appearances and is far younger at 25 than Taylor at 34, and has started the last six games.

That said, the two's stats are comparable, with DeVito completing 63. 6 percent of his passes for 1,087 yards and eight touchdowns with three picks in eight total appearances. Meanwhile, Taylor has completed 61.7 percent of his passes for 725 yards and three touchdowns with one pick in nine appearances, just three of which were starts.

The two players' QB ratings are strikingly close as well, with DeVito at 88.9 and Taylor at 87.2.

But with Aaron Donald, and a surprisingly good Rams pass rush lining up against a suspect Giants offensive line, perhaps the more mobile Taylor could be the answer for Daboll.

Either way, it is a far from ideal situation for New York.
