Saints add another running back with NFL experience
The New Orleans Saints added another running back with NFL experience to the roster.
The addition of Kerwynn Williams on Thursday came less than one week after the team added former Falcons and Buccaneers running back Jacquizz Rodgers.
To make room for Williams, the Saints waived Matthew Dayes with an injury designation. The Saints initially signed Dayes in May.
Williams (5-foot-8, 198 pounds) came out of Utah State as a seventh-round selection by the Indianapolis Colts in 2013. He played four seasons from 2014 to 2017 with the Arizona Cardinals.
For his career, Williams has 218 carries for 971 rushing yards and four touchdowns. He also has 15 receptions for 126 yards.
He did not play in 2018. The Kansas City Chiefs signed him as an unrestricted free agent and released him Sept. 1. He signed a futures contract Jan. 3 with the Detroit Lions, who released him in May. He also spent a week in May with Tampa Bay.
If the roster holds, the Saints will enter the preseason opener Friday against the Minnesota Vikings with six running backs: Alvin Kamara, Latavius Murray, Dwayne Washington, Devine Ozigbo, Rodgers and Williams.
The Saints also had former Tulane running back Rob Kelley on the roster for five days until his release Aug. 3. He played parts of the last three seasons with Washington.
