'Distracted' Drew Lock 'Now Clear' on Seahawks QB Position, Says Carroll

Drew Lock had to endure a tough season last year as Geno Smith won the starting job, but Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll states that now Lock has gotten a better handle on his situation.

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Drew Lock took some time to get used to the idea of being Geno Smith's backup. But now after another offseason working to get better, the former Denver Broncos QB finally looks to be enjoying football again.

After being in a battle with Smith for the starting job last offseason, Lock was forced to sit as he didn't play a meaningful snap. Naturally, that can be hard to take, but coach Pete Carroll now says that Lock is clear on the situation and added that mentally, he is in a good spot.

“During the offseason [last year], I thought he was working through it,” Carroll said. “It was a different mentality for him. When you come in, and you’re battling for the one spot, and now he sees Geno have the great year, there’s a different reality to it.

“I thought that right near the end of the offseason I thought he finally started to get going,” Carroll said. “I think he was naturally distracted by trying to put it in perspective and all. He’s come back really clear. He knew he was going to play a bunch in preseason, so his mind has been in a great place. He’s doing terrific now.”

With Lock playing a starring role in Seattle's 24-13 win over the Minnesota Vikings as he completed 17 of his 24 passes for 191 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception, he is now in a good frame of mind.

Of course, Smith is still the starter going forward, but now having the quarterback room on the same page makes everything feel a little easier.

There's no power struggle or bitterness, and while it might have taken Lock a while to get used to his current situation, now, he and Geno are now working as one.

“Those two guys are connected, helping each other every step of the way and really counting on each other, it’s all going good,” Carroll said.

The Seahawks face the Dallas Cowboys in their next preseason game on Saturday night at Lumen Field,
