Seahawks WR DK Metcalf Nominated for Pepsi Rookie of the Week

Following a tremendous performance against the Buccaneers in a Week 9 win, Seahawks rookie receiver DK Metcalf has been nominated as one of five candidates for Pepsi Rookie of the Week honors.
Along with Metcalf, Raiders running back Josh Jacobs, Bills running back Devin Singletary, Buccaneers linebacker Devin White, and Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray are also nominees for the award.
During the first three quarters of action at CenturyLink Field, Metcalf only had two receptions for 17 yards. But he exploded during the fourth quarter and overtime, catching four passes for 106 yards, including a 53-yard touchdown from Russell Wilson to give Seattle a 34-27 lead with 4:25 remaining in regulation.
Starting in tight alignment as the lone receiver on the left side of the formation, Metcalf ran a deep crossing route and Wilson led him perfectly in stride, allowing the 6-foot-3, 228-pound receiver to beat cornerback Jamel Dean in a foot race to the end zone.
“He’s trusting me.” Metcalf said in regard to his chemistry with Wilson. “It starts in practice. He’s trusting me in practice and it translates to the game.”

Metcalf came through in the clutch again in overtime, battling through an uncalled face mask penalty by Dean and reeling in a back shoulder throw from Wilson for a 29-yard gain to move the Seahawks to the Buccaneers 6-yard line. Two plays later, Wilson found tight end Jacob Hollister for the game-winning touchdown pass.
Finishing the game with a new career-best 123 receiving yards on six receptions, Metcalf continues to impress coach Pete Carroll with his maturity, work ethic, and desire to improve.
“He’s got the presence of mind. He’s a real competitor. He’s the real deal.” Carroll told reporters after Sunday’s win. “We’ve been around enough young guys, we know what they’re like when they come through the process. He’s not typical. He’s atypical. He’s well ahead of the curve, in his smarts and awareness and savvy.”
A second-round selection out of Ole Miss, Metcalf currently ranks third in receptions (29), first in receiving yardage (525), and first in touchdowns among all NFL rookies. He also ranks eighth in the NFL averaging 18.1 yards per reception, already proving himself to be one of the premier deep threats in the league.
