Geno Smith Reveals Thoughts on Seahawks Drafting New QB

"I love to compete," Geno Smith says as he announces official re-signing with the Seahawks. "So I'll compete with anybody but I'm also going to help them out as much as I can.''

Geno Smith may very well be both the Seattle Seahawks starting quarterback and the "bridge'' to the future at the position.

And his reaction to that latter possibility?

"Bring it on!'' ... essentially.

"I love to compete," Smith said during his Thursday press conference to announce his official re-signing with the Seahawks. "So I'll compete with anybody but I'm also going to help them out as much as I can.''

Fans of the 32-year-old Geno are not surprised at his response to the possibility, as stated by head coach Pete Carroll, that the team could still take a quarterback high in the upcoming 2023 NFL Draft.

This draft features Alabama's Bryce Young, Florida's Anthony Richardson, and Ohio State's C.J. Stroud, all quarterbacks expected to come off the board quickly.

Seattle owns the No. 5 overall pick. If a "franchise'' prospect is there, an argument can be made ...

Just as an argument can be made that the Seahawks already have a playoff roster and should add weaponry that helps Smith and company win now.

Smith is coming off a career year after taking over for trade-away Russell Wilson, and the team rewarded Smith with what has been billed as a three-year, $105 million contract (it's technically a deal with $25 million APY base salaries) with $52 million guaranteed this offseason.

Smith completed 70 percent of his passes for 4,282 yards while throwing 30 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 2022, putting up an impressive 101 passer rating. Along with winning NFL Comeback Player of the Year, he earned his first-ever Pro Bowl nod.

All of that adds up to Geno getting rewarded ... but also maybe getting some young competition alongside him.

Bring it on.
