Seahawks Lose Game, Several Starters vs. Rams as Pete Carroll Provides Injury Update

Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll offered an update on the injuries suffered by offensive tackles Charles Cross and Abraham Lucas, outside linebacker Boye Mafe and receiver Tyler Lockett during Sunday's loss to the Los Angeles Rams.

The Seattle Seahawks began the new season with a disappointing 30-13 loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday at Lumen Field - but may have dodged a few injury bullets along the way.

Already entering the game down a few key players in safety Jamal Adams (quad) and first-round cornerback Devon Witherspoon (hamstring), the Seahawks watched as several more starters departed with injuries.

Seattle lost both offensive tackles - Charles Cross and Abraham Lucas - along with stellar outside linebacker Uchenna Nwosu and was forced to play without receiver Tyler Lockett for an extended period before returning after passing concussion protocol.

Cross was carted off the field with a toe injury and didn't return to the game. He did, however, come back to Seattle's sideline with his helmet and was seen practicing pass sets, a positive indication for his long-term outlook.

After the game, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll provided a positive update on Cross' status.

"Charles got a sprained big toe and the X-rays didn't look bad," Carroll said. "He felt something, so we had to look at him."

The news on Lucas isn't as positive, as Carroll cited the continuation of a knee problem that affected him during camp and reared its ugly head again Sunday.

"Abe's knee acted up on him again," Carroll said. "He doesn't have a knee injury. It's the same knee we rested him on during camp, and it just got really sore during the game and he couldn't fire the way he needed to, and so we had to get him out of there.

"So, I don't know what to tell you about that."

Nwosu went down to a knee late and was looked at by trainers. Carroll didn't mention him postgame but did say that second year outside linebacker Boye Mafe was looked at for a knee injury but came back "alright."

The same sentiment is true for Lockett, as was expected after his return to the field.

"He's fine," Carroll said. "He was examined, but he was fine."

As such, the Seahawks appear to be departing Week 1 without much long-term concern, although Lucas' knee problem is something to monitor.

The Seahawks - with hopes of getting Witherspoon and Adams back in the fold - return to action next Sunday with a road game against the Detroit Lions at 10 a.m. PST.
