Seahawks TE Will Dissly to Undergo Season-Ending Achilles Surgery

Seattle will lose the rising star tight end for the rest of 2019, but the organization expects a full recovery for 2020.

After exiting Sunday’s 32-28 win in Cleveland with an apparent Achilles injury, the Seahawks will be without star tight end Will Dissly for the remainder of the 2019 season.

Initially reported by Ian Rapoport of NFL Network and confirmed to Seahawk Maven by multiple sources, Dissly will undergo surgery for a torn Achilles tendon on Thursday. He’s expected to land on injured reserve, but the organization remains optimistic he’ll be fully recovered in time for the 2020 campaign.

Returning successfully from a torn patellar tendon suffered during his rookie season, Dissly emerged as one of the NFL’s best young tight ends during the first month of the season. Not missing a beat after a rigorous rehab, he recorded 23 receptions for 262 yards and caught four touchdowns in Seattle’s first five games.

But bad luck struck Dissly again at FirstEnergy Stadium this past weekend. While trying to adjust to a throw from Russell Wilson in the end zone, his left leg buckled and he dropped to the turf. After being helped off the field by trainers, he was immediately ruled out and did not return.

As expected from the ever-so-positive Dissly, coach Pete Carroll spoke with the former Washington standout after Sunday’s win and he’s already itching to get his recovery jump-started for 2020.

“Just an amazing attitude. It was the attitude that took him through the past rehab.” Carroll said on Monday. “You hate to get good at something like that, but he’s prepared to take this on. He’ll do a fantastic job and will beat all of the time frames that he’s faced with and will do a great job returning.”

With Dissly sidelined for the rest of the year, the Seahawks will lean heavily on veteran Luke Willson and recently-promoted Jacob Hollister at tight end. The team also re-signed Tyrone Swoopes to the practice squad on Tuesday as additional insurance and Ed Dickson could be available to return from injured reserve after Week 8.

Carroll also didn’t rule out the possibility Seattle could pursue other options, indicating the team is “always working on it,” though a trade before the October 29 deadline seems unlikely at this point.
