Sunday Rewind: Revisiting Seahawks Week 5 Victory Against Rams

Looking to build off an impressive road performance against the Cardinals, the Seahawks headed home and were scheduled for another NFC West matchup in Week 5, this time against the Rams.
Despite allowing nearly 400 passing yards from Los Angeles’ offense, Seattle relied heavily on its own passing attack to lead the team to victory. Throwing four touchdown passes on the evening, Russell Wilson was able to guide his team to a narrow one-point victory when the final second expired.
Let’s look back upon some of the critical moments that ultimately led to the Seahawks’ 30-29 victory against the Rams during their primetime divisional showdown.
1. Limiting Los Angeles to a 47-yard field goal following Jaron Brown’s fumble.
Starting with possession of the football to begin the game, the Seahawks were hoping to strike first on their opening drive of the first quarter. Just two plays later, receiver Jaron Brown was stripped of the football before running out of bounds, allowing the Rams offense to begin their first drive at Seattle’s 33-yard line.
After running back Todd Gurley gained nine yards on the first play of the drive, it seemed the Seahawks were destined to surrender seven points early in the opening quarter. But thanks to Poona Ford’s tackle for loss on the ensuing play, the Rams’ offense was pushed back five yards and they were ultimately forced to settle for a 47-yard field goal after failing to convert on third down.
Without the crucial play from Ford, the outcome of this game could’ve changed dramatically. Since Seattle won by just a single point, an early touchdown from Los Angeles would’ve likely helped them control the scoreboard at the conclusion of the fourth quarter.
2. Trailing 6-0, Tyler Lockett’s 13-yard touchdown reception hands Seattle its first lead of the game.
Following the Rams’ second field goal of the game, this time from 32 yards, the Seahawks trailed 6-0 with just under five minutes remaining in the first quarter. Needing to score some points of their own, the offense knew they needed to create a spark to grab momentum back from Los Angeles.
Starting at their own 25-yard line, the Seahawks only gained 24 yards over the next five plays but picked up a massive chunk of yardage on the sixth play of the drive. With his team 11 yards short of the first down marker, Wilson located tight end Will Dissly on a corner route and connected for a 38-yard reception, positioning his team at the Rams’ 13-yard line.
While attempting to pass on the next play, the pocket quickly collapsed on Wilson, forcing him to scramble to his left. However, the six-time Pro Bowler refused to quit on the play and miraculously found receiver Tyler Lockett in the back corner of the end zone for the score, handing his team a 7-6 advantage.
3. Midway through the second quarter, DK Metcalf’s touchdown reception extends Seattle's lead to 14-6.
After forcing a pair of punts from the Rams’ offense, the Seahawks regained possession of the ball and were looking to add to their lead with plenty of time left before halftime. Thanks to a 17-yard reception from Lockett to begin the drive, Seattle quickly surged to its own 44-yard line and required less than three minutes to find the end zone once again.
Four plays later, Seattle was positioned at Los Angeles’ 40-yard line and needed to gain seven yards to pick up a first down. Luckily, a critical pass coverage breakdown by the Rams’ secondary allowed receiver DK Metcalf to come free running towards the end zone and was found wide open for his second touchdown of the season, providing the Seahawks with an eight-point lead halfway through the second quarter.
As a result of defensive end Jadeveon Clowney’s fumble recovery, the offense was provided another scoring opportunity before halftime but Jason Myers missed to the right on a 48-yard field goal attempt. While the Rams trimmed the Seahawks’ lead to 14-13, Metcalf’s touchdown allowed his team to control the scoreboard heading into the second half.
4. Following Chris Carson’s touchdown reception, Tedric Thompson’s interception increased Seattle’s chances of securing the victory.
With the Rams connecting on a 36-yard field goal attempt, they were able to take a five point lead with just over nine minutes remaining in regulation. Attempting to retake the lead along with draining time off the clock, Wilson led the Seahawks' offense 75 yards and connected for a touchdown with running back Chris Carson on a pivotal fourth down play. After corralling the pass after initially bobbling it, Seattle took a 30-29 lead and left just over two minutes left on the clock.
Following Seattle’s touchdown, Los Angeles started its next drive at their own 25-yard line and were desperate to advance into scoring position. Just four plays into the drive, quarterback Jared Goff’s pass deflected off receiver Gerald Everett’s hands and allowed free safety Tedric Thompson to make a spectacular diving interception.
While the Seahawks were only able to bleed 30 seconds off the clock before they were forced to punt, the possession left less than two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Even though Los Angeles surged into field goal range, time became a factor and they were forced to kick from 44 yards but missed to the right, handing Seattle its fourth victory of the campaign.
