Thursday Rewind: Revisiting Seahawks Week 4 Victory Against Cardinals

Coming off a disappointing Week 3 loss against the Saints, the Seahawks were looking to put their poor performance behind them as they hit the road for a divisional matchup against the Cardinals in Week 4.
Luckily for Seattle, facing off against a rebuilding Arizona squad was exactly what they needed to boost team morale. Despite allowing 321 total yards, the defense only surrendered 10 points and was able to generate four sacks as well.
Let’s look back upon some of the critical moments that ultimately led to the Seahawks’ 27-10 victory against the Cardinals during their second road game of the 2019 campaign.
1. Following a 33-yard field goal, Jadeveon Clowney’s pick six provides Seattle an early 10-point lead.
After the Cardinals missed to the right on a 43-yard field goal attempt, the Seahawks were able to capitalize by scoring three points of their own halfway through the first quarter, taking a 3-0 lead. Now trailing, Arizona’s offense was looking to crack the score sheet during its second drive of the game.
Starting at their own 25-yard line, the Cardinals quickly gained five yards following a short pass on the outside to running back David Johnson. Attempting to move the chains on a screen play, defensive end Jadeveon Clowney extended his arm and intercepted quarterback Kyler Murray’s pass, rushing 27 yards for the score and handing his team a 10-0 lead.
While a 33-yard field goal provided Arizona its first points of the game 12 plays later, this defensive score preserved Seattle’s lead and allowed them to hold a seven-point edge early in the second quarter. Without Clowney's interception, the Cardinals could've tied the game or taken a four-point lead in the opening quarter.
2. Looking to extend their lead, Will Dissly’s touchdown pushes Seattle’s advantage to 17-3 in the second quarter.
Following Arizona’s field goal, Seattle started its second drive of the game at its own 25-yard line. Thanks to a 32-yard reception from receiver Jaron Brown, their offense jumped to the Cardinals’ 37-yard line just three plays later.
Looking to gain another chunk of yardage, quarterback Russell Wilson connected with receiver Tyler Lockett for a 28-yard reception on the next play. Now positioned at the Cardinals’ nine-yard line, it only took two plays for the Seahawks to surge into the end zone, as tight end Will Dissly came wide open for a nine-yard touchdown reception.
With their lead extended to 14 points, this touchdown likely assured the Seahawks would enter halftime controlling the scoreboard. Once Arizona missed another field goal attempt and was forced to punt over their next two drives, Seattle added to its impressive first-half performance by kicking a 24-yard field goal, extending their lead to 20-3.
3. Seattle maintained momentum by forcing Arizona to punt during its opening drive of the third quarter.
Carrying a 17-point lead coming out of halftime, the Seahawks controlled possession of the football to begin the third quarter. Unfortunately, their drive stalled at their own 42-yard line and they failed to gain four yards on third down, forcing them to punt.
After sacking Wilson on third down, the Cardinals were starting to display signs of life just over four minutes into the third quarter. Starting at their own 19-yard line, Arizona’s offense was hoping to cut into Seattle’s lead by scoring their first touchdown of the contest. However, those aspirations were denied on an impressive second down play by linebacker Mychal Kendricks.
With the Cardinals 10 yards short of the first down marker, their offense was looking avoid another incomplete pass and was hoping to inch closer to the yard marker. But thanks to Kendricks’ second sack of the game, Arizona was pushed back 10 yards and were ultimately forced to punt, preserving Seattle’s 20-3 lead.
4. Leading 20-10 in the fourth quarter, C.J. Prosise’s touchdown seals Seattle’s victory.
As a result of free safety Tedric Thompson’s unnecessary roughness penalty, the Cardinals were provided a prime scoring opportunity and were able to score their first touchdown of the game. Still leading 20-10 with just over 10 minutes left in the fourth quarter, the Seahawks needed to drain a significant chunk of the clock to secure the victory.
Luckily for Seattle, this was another perfect situation for Wilson, who’s one of the league’s most elite quarterbacks during the fourth quarter. Starting at their own 25-yard line, the six-time Pro Bowler led the Seahawks offense 75 yards on 15 plays – eating up eight minutes on the clock – and capped off the drive by handing the ball to running back C.J. Prosise, who produced his only rushing touchdown of the season.
Now leading 27-10, this pivotal drive provided the Seahawks a 17-point lead and left just over two minutes remaining on the clock. While Arizona fought until the final horn sounded, it wasn’t enough to mount a comeback, as Seattle earned its third victory of the 2019 campaign.
